Over the past few months, I have had the pleasure of photographing the Lunchbox Garden Club at Barnett Shoals Elementary School in Athens, Ga. The after school program was founded by five students at the University of Georgia in 2012 and they seek to increase children’s food literacy. They want kids to understand food; where it comes from, how to prepare it, have an appreciation for high quality food, know the difference between healthy and unhealthy food and understand the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables. The club doesn’t want cellophane to be the main component of a child’s lunchbox. Their goal is for kids to reach for an apple instead of a bag of chips. Pretty cool concept if you ask me.
